Why blackberries?

Because firstly they taste amazing and secondly they would grow wild and freely available from bushes along roads everywhere while growing up in Ireland. A real happy childhood memory!

Lonesome Boatman The Fureys & Davey Arthur

‘The Lonesone Boatman’ was a song  released in 1980 on the old Banshee label by The Fureys & Davey Arthur. Written by Finbar Furey, it’s a haunting tune played with a long tin whistle known as kerrywhistle cobre high D alongside guitar and other traditional instruments.

This version on YouTube is from the 1985 Harmac compilation album called ‘Green Fields of Home’.

Magic Hat

A little toy nostalgia with the ‘Hat Full of Magic’ or just Magic Hat as we used to call it.

This may or may not be the exact  version we had in the 1970’s, but it looks like it. The hat itself was if remembered correctly a hard plastic shell with hidden buttons on the inside of the rim. Being hard plastic with sharp edging it wasn’t very comfortable when placed on one’s head. The tricks were fun and entertaining though, and often a show of magic skills was demanded from the adults after dinner. ‘Don’t remember it being too popular in Ireland, only heard one other guy in my school who had it. It definately wasn’t a toy you would take into school with you, too many small items and easily broken if in the wrong hands!

But a few hours fun at home was guaranteed!

Farewell Sudocrem!

..created in 1931 by Prof.Thomas Smith in the back of his shop on the Old Cabra Road Dublin, the nappy rash cream ‘Sudocrem’ was originally packaged in glass jars. Yesterday was a sad day though, with the news that the manufacturing of this wonder cream used for many ailments and famously favoured by Madonna is now moving to Bulgaria. 😔

.. one can only wonder if it will ever be the same without that Irish touch☘️ …will Sudocrem simply become a Pseudocrem? 😳

pseudo [ˈsjuːdəʊ]
ADJECTIVE – not genuine;
spurious or sham.

The Arklow Pyramid

The Arklow Pyramid

…The Howard Mausoleum, Kilbride, Arklow, Co.Wicklow. …This pyramid was built in 1785 as a mausoleum for the Howard family of nearby Shelton Abbey. Situated on a small hill just north of the town, this monument was described by Sir John Betjeman (1906-84) as the largest pyramid tomb ‘beyond the banks of the Nile’. ..This photo was taken by ourselves back in 1988 while on a visit to Arklow. ..’got to see Eileen Dunne too!! 😜🎉
